The Ayurvedic Approach to Healthy Blood Sugar
A 3,000-year-old way of looking at food, digestion and daily habits, explained in plain English, with simple steps you can start today.
India's traditional system of natural health
Ayurveda (say it "eye-ur-VAY-da") means "the knowledge of life." It began in India more than 3,000 years ago and is still practiced by millions of people today.
Its main idea is simple: good health comes from good digestion and a balanced daily routine. Instead of looking at one number on a lab report, Ayurveda looks at the whole person: what you eat, when you eat, how you move, how you sleep and how stressed you are.
Two simple ideas
You don't need to learn a new vocabulary. Ayurveda's view of blood sugar comes down to two ideas:
So the Ayurvedic goal is simple: keep the digestive fire strong, and keep the body light.
Signs your balance may be off
- •Strong cravings for sweets or carbs, especially in the afternoon or evening
- •Feeling heavy, sleepy or foggy after meals
- •An energy crash around 3 p.m.
- •Hard to get going in the morning
- •Feeling hungry again soon after eating
These are everyday signs, not a diagnosis. If you have concerns about your blood sugar, please see your doctor and get tested.
Four pillars of balance
Eat with the sun
Make lunch your biggest meal, when digestion is strongest. Eat a lighter dinner, ideally before 7 p.m., and avoid late-night snacking.
Favor bitter, spicy & warm
Bitter greens, warming spices and cooked meals keep digestion strong. Cut back on sweet, cold, fried and heavy foods.
Move every day
A brisk morning walk and a 10-minute stroll after meals help your body use the energy from food.
Use herbs & spices
Cinnamon, fenugreek, turmeric, gymnema and bitter melon have been used in Indian kitchens and remedies for centuries.*
Foods to enjoy and foods to limit
| Enjoy more | Limit |
|---|---|
| Leafy greens, broccoli, green beans, zucchini, bitter melon | White bread, pastries, sugary cereals |
| Lentils, mung beans, chickpeas | Sweets, soda, sweetened coffee drinks |
| Barley, millet, quinoa, small portions of brown rice | Fried and heavy, greasy foods |
| Ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper, fenugreek | Ice-cold drinks, especially with meals |
| Warm water or ginger tea through the day | Large late-night meals and snacking |
A simple Ayurvedic day
On waking: A glass of warm water. Try a pinch of cinnamon or a few fenugreek seeds soaked overnight.
Morning: 20–30 minutes of walking or yoga before breakfast.
Breakfast: Something warm and light, like vegetable oats, a millet porridge with cinnamon, or eggs with sautéed greens.
Lunch (biggest meal): Lentils or beans, plenty of cooked vegetables, a small portion of whole grains, and spices like ginger and turmeric.
After meals: A 10-minute walk.
Afternoon: Ginger tea instead of a sweet snack. A handful of nuts if you're hungry.
Dinner (light, before 7 p.m.): Vegetable soup or dal with greens.
Evening: Screens off early, in bed by 10:30 p.m. Good sleep helps balance cravings the next day.
